Founder & Director
Stefan van Veenendaal
I started my career in the built environment in the office of the Surveyor-General: KwaZulu-Natal, as a survey officer and then worked for the Regional Land Claims Commission. I then went on to obtain a BSc Geomatics (Survey) at the University of Cape Town in 2018 under the Department of Land Reform and Rural Development’s bursary scheme. I completed a Master of City and Regional Planning, also at UCT, while lecturing land surveying law to undergraduates.
Now a registered professional land surveyor and professional planner, the combination of these skills means I am able to offer an uncommon depth of spatial, legal and design insight to high impact land development, be it masterplanning new developments, urban densification and intensification, or land tenure security formalisation and informal settlement upgrading.
I founded GeoDesign in my hometown of Pietermaritzburg in 2021. The firm now exists to partner with developers and communities to produce high quality, livable and beautiful urban and rural spaces which serve communities’ needs.

Development
For Africa
Say the word ‘land’ in South Africa and you will conjur different ideals and realities for nearly everyone you meet. From images of untouched African bush, to dense ‘kasi’, the deep trauma of forced evictions under apartheid, or the freedom of a first home, land is symbolic, political and deeply meaningful. For these reasons, we cannot afford to get development wrong.
I believe ‘good development’ is development which is context bound, acknowledges these varied meanings and associations and works to deliver places which are deeply human.
Good development occurs when we understand what is appropriate in a given context, and where technical data drives advice.
